--ÒKreschatikÕs childrenÓ is based upon the World War II recollections of Lyudmila Sokolovskaya and Peter Mezhiritsky. Sokolovskaya wartime experience had much in common with that of Anne Frank, although she miraculously survived the Nazi occupation of Kiev. Mezhiritsky, also from Kiev, whose family members perished in the Babi Yar massacre, was himself hastily evacuated from Kiev during episodes of heavy gunfire.
