August Perschke was born in 1939 and has lived his whole life on the farm. In his seventies he wrote a collection of stories for his grandchildren to enjoy about his beloved animals and the Beaver River Ranch. He refers to himself as "Grandpa Gus" as a central character in one story. He also includes "Grandma" as a strong character in his writings. It includes stories about beavers and coyotes and even one story about a boy's 10th birthday party in 1949, referring to the main character as 'Lil'August. With colored photos illustrated by a local artisan, Elaine S. Olson, the written adventures come to life and delight a child's imagination.
