ÔAutobiography ought to capture the character not only of
the author but those they are close to. I believe Mum has
succeeded in this. A Life in Four Parts provides a
valuable insight into a period of rapid social change from
austerity into an affluent world of gadgets. A major theme
Ð it seems to me Ð is that of Protestant values. By that I
mean more than abstinence from alcohol. Methodists
frown upon Ôdemon drinkÕ. Yet they also nurture in their
offspring resilience to whatever comes their way, be it
rotting wood or the loss of a loved one. If there is a
message in these pages then it is how life ought to be lived with joyful dignity; not allowing anything to get you down, standing firm and facing your battles with your
head held high. That could be refusing to allow sepsis to
get the better of you, or spending a summer erecting a
conservatory. You will have your own view, IÕm sure. I
hope that you will enjoy reading this book as much as I
have enjoyed editing it.Õ Mike Clough, April 2019
