Woke can encompass anything from changing the race and sex of characters in comic books to drenching political opponents with strawberry milkshakes. In the arts it can mean a compulsive desire not to offend, a timidity which renders cultural production desperately beige. In education it can entail teaching children there are one hundred genders. In the news media it can involve toeing a particular line, against Trump, against Brexit, for the anthropogenic theory of climate change. In student unions it has given rise to demands for safe spaces and trigger warnings, along with no-platforming policies or what is more conventionally referred to as censorship and narrow-mindedness.
