Roman Britain, 242 AD - We are in Lindinis, a small town in the south west of the province. A boy called Allyn, the son of a blacksmith, is celebrating his 8th birthday. He visits his father at the forge, but all is not as it should be.
At the forge Allyn does not find his father but two impostors - a Roman soldier and his own best friend Julius. What is the soldier doing helping himself to the blacksmithÕs tools and why is Julius helping him? What stops the soldier from killing Allyn on the spot?
Allyn soon finds himself in a terrible dilemma. Does he lie to his parents, or does he tell them the truth and face the wrath of the soldier? What can he do to save himself and see that the soldier is brought to justice? And who can he turn to for help?
