Diesel Power, January 1934 : A new high-speed engine decidedly novel in its design has been placed on the market. This product of the American Diesel Engine Co., is termed the "Monovalve," since it uses a single valve in the head to act as the inlet and exhaust passage. Charging the cylinder with fresh air is brought about by the partial vacuum created at the valve by the inertia of the column of exhaust gases. While this is quite automotive in appearance, several have been installed in pumping plants; the four cylinder unit is rated at 125 h p. at 1200 revolutions.
