Originally published in serial form in the Knoxville Daily Chronicle between February 16, 1879 and April 30, 1880, Among Loyal Mountaineers contains the Civil War reminiscences of Major Will McTeer, a Blount County Unionist.
Raised in the Ellejoy community, McTeer fled home under the cover of night while Blount County was under Confederate occupation in 1862. This narrative of his life in the 3rd Tennessee begins at the Cumberland Gap and follows the war through to the fall of the secession, including descriptions of the battle of Stone's River, the sinking of the Sultana, and other milestones in the war.
