'Among the Southerners of the Pacific' is an English translation of the 1910 book 'Chez les MŽridionaux du Pacifique' by P. Soane Malia. The title is a play by the author on the meaning of the word ÔTongaÕ as South, hence Tongans translates as Southerners. His nom de plume 'P. Soane Malia' or Patele Soane Malia is the name by which he was known in Tonga ever since he first arrived there from France as a 29-year-old Fr. Joseph FŽlix Blanc SM in May 1901. The book is basically Fr. Blanc's running commentary on various aspects of Tongan society up to the time of publication (1910), ranging from Tonga's history, politics, laws and constitution to its oral traditions, customs and legends, especially those peculiar to both Tonga and Tongans., Tonga, Oceania, Missionaries, Catholicism, P.
