The first space stations began to appear in orbit in the 1970's after the successful moon landings during the Apollo program. The Soviet Union launched multiple space stations, in which the United States responded with the Skylab program. The development of Space Station Mir by the Soviet Union created a second space race to build space stations, which quickly became a very expensive endeavor.
