This research examines the historical perspective, international application of accessibility, and the social attitudes towards disability. The research also includes analysis of a project that examines how inaccessible public environments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia hinder people with disabilities from achieving economic and social development. Currently, Ethiopia does not have strict construction laws to create accessible conditions. Moreover, builders do not always enforce the existing rules and regulations. Data collected in June 2017 from four higher educational institutions in Addis Ababa were analyzed and used to evaluate the built environment, in regard to mobility issues, and to determine the level of accessibility. Findings can be used to generate solutions such as appropriate dimensions for ramps, entry clearance, corridors, and other spaces. This guidebook will be supported by written description and visual images and can be utilized to design existing and future structures.
