The Assyrians, an ethnic and religious community, were once promised a national state in what is today KurdistanÑhistorically known to them as the "Land of Assyria." During WWI, they were displaced from their ancestral home in the Hakkari Mountains, beginning a migration to Iran, then to Iraq by 1919-1920. Settling in the newly formed state of Iraq, they maintained hope of returning to Hakkari, but this dream remained unrealized.
This study highlights the life of Hakkari Assyrians in Iraq from 1933 to 1988. Most research stops at 1933, the year of the Simele massacre, leaving the Assyrians' story thereafter largely untold. This work fills that gap, documenting their experiences up to 1988, a pivotal year marked by the Anfal campaign in southern Kurdistan, which profoundly impacted both Assyrians and Kurds. This study offers insight into the Assyrians' shared historical struggles with the Kurdish community in Iraq.
