"Aunt Mandy: A West Virginia Life" tells the remarkable story of Aunt Amanda Osburn who spent her life of nearly a century in the wilds of West Virginia in the Twelve Pole Valley. She grew up on the frontier and lost her first husband during the Civil War. Despite raids by soldiers on her home, she and her children survived. Amanda outlived two more husbands and provided for her children by operating a hotel and boarding house in the town of Wayne. When in her nineties, Amanda became a political figure and spoke out in favor of women's obligation to vote. Her sons became political figures in their own right with one serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas.
