In the month of February of 2019, the graduating 8th grade class of ChildrenÕs Day School in San Francisco was given an interesting assignment. They were told to create a work of fiction, a short story; a story that would eventually become part of a book and put out into the world for all to see. Given only a basic outline and a couple of prompts, the 8th graders nervously put their pens to paper and fingers to keyboards and began a long process filled with self-deprecation, panic, and lots and lots of editing. Finally, after about a month of labor, each student produced a few pages of writing. Some decided to create pieces made only with subjects and predicates. Some created stories made from interpretations of philosophical ideas. Some wrote fake letters to a fake relative set during the Civil War. While others wrote stories for their household pet to enjoy. From us to you...An Awkward Thumbs Up!
