I had just two years of ÒPublic School PianoÓ during my four years at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., but I thought I knew enough to give my grandson, John, piano lessons to see if he had some musical interest and to get him started. He is right-handed and soon noticed that the bass clef was an uncomfortable mystery. I promised to write cheerful songs for him by his next lesson. I wrote ÒSunny Day,Ó and it was a success. So, I wrote another song for the next week, and the next, and on and on. I had fun thinking up songs, telling stories, figuring out a logical progression, and solving problems.
