Black Rock is a mountain feature along the Coromandel Range of New Zealand. Beulah is the lifestyle property at the foot of Black Rock, which is visible from miles around and well known in the rural Hauraki district, rich in natural and man-made history.
This then, is the first edition of a series which is fascinating in the personalities that have developed and created their stories of home and garden of the property at the end of the rainbow.
Historically, Beulah owes its name to Black Rock and enjoys a rich pedigree from the various personalities that developed the farm and surrounds. Various owners experimented with a whole range of unsuccessful and some lucrative businesses. In 1973 the Black Rock Farm was a 20-acre part of the property of Mr Sam Craig, who occupied the farm next door. The Craig farm was later bought by Archie White and then Jack Morrison. In 1910 Black Rock farm was brought from Mr Houlihan by Joseph Nathan, a businessman in Paeroa. Joseph Nathan died suddenly in 1915 and in 1926 Mrs Nathan sold to Jack and Ethel Mitchell. Jack Mitchell died in 1970 and Ethel, on remarrying, sold the farm in 1973 to the Kelly family.
Peter Kelly demolished the cottage in September 1973 and built the existing Hinuera Stone house for his bride Denise Taylor, the daughter of Merv and Bev Taylor who currently still live in Paeroa. Peter sold the property to Len and Phyllis Pearson who in turn sold it to Stu and Dee McColl in 2013.
