Through examining the architecture of confinement, adaptations can be made within prisons to promote the health and growth of incarcerated citizens.
Creating spaces that encourage healing and learning will help to smooth the transition to a life of freedom. This will also reduce the social and economic resources required to reintegrate newly released prisoners in to society.
While addressing the need for spaces to promote overall health, an opportunity is created to rethink circulation and implement innovative health adaptations to the building, creating a healthier environment for mind and body. By designing products that work with the existing prison structure, and structures throughout the surrounding community, systemic health issues within and outside of prisons will be targeted.
From the scale of entire building envelopes to microbial communities within the air, these programmatic and systematic adaptations can aid a failing effort to rehabilitate our most neglected citizens.
