Once a building no longer serves its purpose, and all of its previous functionality ceases, it becomes a beautiful and truly fascinating ecosytem. Each space is transformed into something new and beautiful at its own pace, eroded by water, ice, wind and gravity as nature reclaims this man made space.
The corrosion and decay, lit only by natural sunlight spilling into rooms at odd angles. Each object left behind reveals a sliver of the history prior to its disuse. A dusty pile of x-rays and papers hastily strewn about documents of a tuberculosis patients life at the hospital, from admission, to death, to autopsy, to burial.
If you get hurt, no one is here to help you. This is a world whose dark corners and peeling paint have taken a hold on me and many others; this affinity for derelict buildings and often dangerous excitement is the core essence of what drives me to photograph these dark and beautiful spaces.
