As summer began, students at the Hamdard Center and their volunteer coaches met for the first time. They were told that in just six short weeks, they would be reading together and writing together, with the end goal of writing their own short memoirs for their very own anthology.
The session began with a discussion of important places in our lives Ñ big or small Ñ and how those places left us with special memories. We also read the story of a community garden that was special to a diverse community of characters in the book Seedfolks. Students learned how to use great details and adjectives to describe those special places, and had the chance to apply those skills to their own writing.
Though each student began with an idea of a special place, the stories took on a life of their own. The result was this anthology of stories as unique as the students who wrote them.
