The year was 1987. The author, Philly Salfield and his wife, Pam, were looking for somewhere to start a lifestyle outside of the prevailing Western materialistic culture. A place to bring up their three young children. They decided on Byron Bay as the perfect location. They were both qualified educators who believed in Sylvia Ashton-Warner's paradigm of organic education in conjunction with child-centred project work. The schools in Byron Bay bore no resemblance to this model and so they decided to start their own school. This book is about how this came about and it is also about how the author believes that these two paradigms should be used in primary education.
