Recently divorced and stalked by her ex-husband, KD Jenkins leaves California to spend time with her grandfather on his New Mexico ranch. When she arrives, she finds him dead. Cause of death: rattlesnake bite.
KD inherits the drought-stricken ranch, along with all its troubles. Her grandfather's trusted attorney advises her to sell, though he fears that finding a buyer will be difficult. But KD rejects all advice to sell, deciding instead to make the ranch her permanent home. She settles in, quickly becoming friends with the neighboring ranch owners.
From the beginning, KD's efforts at ranching are plagued by mysterious events ranging from the innocuous to the bizarre. Finally, she becomes convinced that someone is trying to force her to sell the ranch, but who... and why?
