Cats (Mammalia, Carnivora, Felidae, Felis catus) are a common household pet and rodent deterrent in many cultures of the world. Since time immemorial wild cats have been domesticated and their kittens raised as tame cats in many homes. Cats are able to defend themselves against attack by dogs and fight ferociously among themselves. They are very territorial and the tom cat marks its dedicated territory with sprays of its pungent urine. Cats are very diligent and dig a hole and bury their faeces unlike dogs. A cat, like a dog, is extremely adaptable and can survive in any habitat or climatic condition. They are also able to fend for themselves in the wild and will happily live off rodent catches. Hence they have been in human company from the earliest of times. Although some cultures eat cats, they are venerated as special and holy animals in many parts of the world. Their association with humans, their big colourful eyes, their purring and their meowing are found irresistible by many people.
