The Catena Aurea, or the Golden Chain, was compiled by Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth century. It is a lengthy and detailed commentary on the four Gospels that pulls from numerous Church Fathers. The commentary from the various Fathers, rather than feeling disjointed, flows from one commentator to the next to form a seamless "golden chain" of enlightened discussion.

This book, newly revised in April 2020, contains both volumes of Matthew in one large hardcover edition. The other books in this series will identically formatted so that the entire series will be four books instead of six.

The text makes use of the edition translated by John Henry Newman in 1874. However, it contains well over 1,000 revisions to Americanize the spelling, update many difficult archaic words and phrases, and standardize the spelling of biblical names. This is not a photo copy of the original.

Since the English in the original edition was quite archaic, think of this as being like the Revised Standard Version of the Bible vs. the King James Version. It still retains some of the thee/thou language, but in a way that is more easily understood by modern readers.

The Gospels of Mark, Luke, and John are currently being revised. I hope to release at least one volume per year (they are lengthy and take a considerable amount of time). Cutting this set down from six paperback books to four hardcover books makes the series look more attractive and it saves the buyer a few dollars.
