Charles James Tyers was born in London in 1806. He is best known as a surveyor and admnistrator in Victoria, Australia during the 1840s. Lake Tyers in Victoria is named after him.
This booklet details his prior service in the Royal Navy. It corrects an error in the Australian Dictionary of Biography where he is described as a Captain, RN. In fact, he was a Schoolmaster.
Illustrations include a number of his watercolours of Men-o'-War, Turkey, India and North America, together with two of his charts.
