Black Hawk became the leader of the Sauk, Fox, Kickapoo, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) peoples. The 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, which Black Hawk did not agree with, set him in opposition to the U.S. government and sided him with the British in the War Of 1812. Compelled to relocate to Iowa in 1830, he led some 1,000 Sauks, Foxes, and Kickapoos in the 1832 BlackHawk War.
