Critical Access Hospital: The project assignment was to design a prototype Critical Access Hospital [CAH] that operates on ÒLeanÓ principles and accommodate a range of services in a minimal, flexible and cost effective facility. A CAH is Òa rural limited service hospitalÉunder the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant Program. The majority of CAHs are in Health Professional Shortage Areas and/or Medically Underserved Areas.Ó Proposals were expected to be lean/nimble, adaptable/flexible, healthy/green, community integrated and employ steel construction. The program is based upon collaborative care delivery, minimal patient movement and resource utilization. Clinical areas consisted of 36,200 BGSF. Relevant community health-oriented spaces were added so final proposals involved a range of between 40-50,000 BGSF. The overall goal was to conceptually design a prototype that could be adapted for multiple site and context applications.
