Farm experience is essential to Cyclopean Architecture since both depend on analogous reasoning. Cyclopean Architecture is as organic as a planted field, an arduous process entailing numerous steps fraught with failure. This tale of 40 acres and a mule and the buildings it entails begins at the end of a rainbow.

A pot of gold is supposed to be at the end of a rainbow, but thatÕs not what I found on one of our family trips to Hawaii. This trip was unique because we were trying to decide whether to keep our land or sell it. For 30 years, we have unsuccessfully attempted to build a house by hand. Fu Ren doesn't see any future in trying any longer.

We decide to drive out to the site and let the land tell us what to do. As we turn the final corner, we get our answer. A rainbow appears to terminate at the shed. And later, as we drive toward South Point for lunch, the rainbow persists. ItÕs on the highway just in front of the car. ItÕs as close to the end of a rainbow as one can get.

We decide to keep the land. But the irony of all this is that this reality would be impossible if my mother-in-law had been killed in the Second World War. Her survival was a quirk of fate that brings to mind the words of Baldwin.

ÒIt comes as a great shock to see Gary Cooper killing off the Indians, and although you are rooting for Gary Cooper, that the Indians are you.Ó
James Baldwin

I believe I saw a couple of films about the Doolittle raid where the Japanese were running from the bombs. And for many years, those scenes meant very little as I cheered on the American pilots. But on hearing about my wife's family history, all of that changed. The family is in Japan as American bombs fall. With this realization comes the Ògreat shockÓ Baldwin alludes to. The image of Japanese women running from the bombs with children on their backs includes my Chinese mother-in-law.

On learning the truth about the American air raids and their potential impact on my life, I had to reevaluate the propaganda I was fedÐÐonce again, I was required to acknowledge the paradox, a betrayal of sorts, America placed me in of rooting against myself.
