Message from the author:
Hello there! My name is Alana. As a foodie, I have always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, but when I was diagnosed with gastroparesis in 2020, my love for food halted. I was given a feeding tube and thought having a partially paralyzed stomach meant I could no longer enjoy my passion for cooking and food, but boy was I wrong! I began to live by the wise words of my gastroenterologist, ÒThe stomach is a muscle, you have to use it, or youÕre going to lose it.Ó This phrase became a mantra of mine that I still live by today! Over the course of 4 years, I tested out recipes that are now my go-toÕs for gastroparesis cooking. I want to show that your love for food and cooking doesn't have to end with a chronic stomach condition. I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do!
Other things to note about the book:
Meat Choices:
Many with gastroparesis struggle to consume meat, and typically red meat is hard on the stomach. When picking meats for the recipes I wanted to ensure that theyÕre easy on the stomach. Shredded or ground chicken and turkey are great because they are easy to chew and are lean meats. The seafood included in the recipes are another great option because they have less connective tissue than red meat.
Nightshades:
Besides potatoes, because those are the holy grail of a gastroparesis diet, this cookbook doesn't include nightshades. ItÕs because one of the chemicals in nightshades is known to aggravate people with stomach issues and autoimmune diseases. Some of the main nightshades include tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers.
Gluten and Dairy Free:
Some of the recipes included in this book contain gluten or dairy. Some gastroparesis patients report improved symptoms going dairy and/or gluten-free. The dairy in this book can be swapped out for any dairy-free alternative. The same goes for the recipes containing gluten. Flour can be swapped with a 1:1 gluten-free flour mix and soy sauce can be swapped with tamari.
Not Just for Gastroparesis:
The recipes included in this book can be enjoyed by more than just people with gastroparesis. These recipes can be enjoyed by the whole family as well as many other stomach conditions
