The violence of war had come, and those who had drafted themselves to its cause were victims all. Mutinies came from French dissidents and many would die at the Somme, but the allies would hold fast and push against the German bulwark. Orphans came in droves to the Third Street asylum, parents lost or dead. Those children who came by dire consequence would be given as captives to patronage; they would be delivered by train to a south that could only abide them. When everything they had known came to ruin, some weakened souls would rise from these defective institutions and stake claims upon the hills that outlined the vale.
