Beautiful, gracious, gregarious Emily Chabot emigrated as a small child from France to San Francisco in 1851. The heiress to considerable property, she married Remi Chabot, the younger brother of Anthony Chabot, in 1870, and became a prominent member of her communityÑentertaining diplomats, inventors, business tycoons and impoverished ŽmigrŽs with equal cordiality. A strong feminist, she was especially generous to women artists and scientists, and joined other notable women in the East Bay in sponsoring philanthropic causes.
