When the Harrier came into service in 1969 it was a massive technological stride forward. Through its vectored thrust it became the first successful jet offering vertical take-off and landing. It really was unique.
Equipped with the Harrier, Three Squadron was tasked with battlefield interdiction and close air support for the British Army On the Rhine (BAOR). It regularly carried out exercises at remote bases to keep the force prepared for potential attack.
Despite all of this pressure and training there was always time for humour.
