Most quail hunting stories take place in the Deep South or in Texas, hunting bobwhite quail. This one takes place in Arizona and the species hunted are two that relatively few hunters seek, Mearn's quail and Gambel's quail. Written in the form of a day to day journal, the story is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of color photographs. Although the author has seven adult English setters, all very accomplished bird dogs, he also has three setter puppies and the underlying theme is a coming of age tale of how the pups transition from, well, puppies, to accomplished bird dogs in their own right. Sprinkled throughout the book are philosophical discussions about hunter ethics, not preachy but thought-provoking, nonetheless. If you are a quail hunter or aspire to be one, this is the book for you. There is no better choice.
