This book describes the extraordinary adventures of my father during World War 2, first as a South African soldier in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and then in North Africa where he was taken prisoner in November 1941 at the Battle of Sidi Rezegh during Operation Crusader. His POW ship was torpedoed on the way to Greece and he eventually arrived in Italy in early 1942 .He escaped twice in Italy, once when his train was bombed and he stayed with an Italian family for 18 months. Following his re-capture in 1944 he was sent to Dresden where he witnessed the 1000 bomber raids of Dresden as a POW in the hills surrounding Dresden at the end of the war. He then escaped and found his way to Paris and eventually married and returned to South Africa
