We've set one up somewhere high enough, and suddenly thousands of people can watch videos, browse the web, be entertained and connect with each other online. At any given time, an incomprehensible amount of data is being sent over the air.
WhatÕs the magic that makes it all happen? Advances in digital signal processing and the astounding precision of digital circuitry enables us to modulate and combine the fundamentally analog signals in ways that were not only impossible, but also nigh incomprehensible just a short while ago. Today we can put a thousand little antennas in the box instead of just one or a few, and use them together to form beams, manipulate waveforms and send data to a huge number of users at the same time.
New methods and algorithms transcend our understanding of information theory and its limits. We can now send more, much more, a hundred times more data than we thought possible when the theory was first formed. These new methods involve using multiple antennas together coherently, perfectly locked together in the same time base, so that their radiation patterns converge in a controllable way, and thatÕs what allows modern radio networks to satisfy the ever growing need for more data.
