Satellite Navigation has transformed the way we move around the world, becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives. Galileo, the Global Satellite Navigation System of the European Union (EU), provides cutting-edge services that may not be widely known or fully understood. While the GPS system Ñdeveloped by the United StatesÑ is well known to the general public, the Galileo System has the potential for superior accuracy and offers new and innovative services, most of them available to everyone and free of charge.
This book aims to educate readers about the fundamental principles of Satellite Navigation by focusing on explaining the Galileo System. It includes special chapters on applications, on the history of the Galileo Project and its political implications, and on the future of Satellite Navigation especially in the context of the European Union. Additionally, it contains many separate boxes called ÒGood to KnowÓ with relevant information that can be consulted independently and that serve as easily accessible reference points for readers. A few appendices have been included with relevant data, a glossary, as well as a list of suggested readings.
