In 1960 a farmer in Indiana decided to build a public use airport on his farm. Using his own construction equipment, and with the help of his two sons, within a year he had a 3,000 ft paved runway, hangars, office building with restaurant, a Piper dealership, and flight school. But he also faced ongoing lawsuits for zoning issues, nuisance complaints, and competition from the Indianapolis Airport Authority, who eventually took over ownership of the airport through court actions that went all the way to the Indiana Supreme Court. Included with this story are over 200 photos of airport life in the 1960s with general aviation airplanes from J3s to DC-3s.
