Lt Colonel George Thomas Chaloner served with
the British Indian Army in the Second World War and
was stationed in India during the turbulent period
of transition from British rule to
independence in 1947.
This diary documents GeorgeÕs interactions with
locals, fellow officers and the vast Indian terrain as
well as the exotic wildlife (including elephants,
tigers and bison!). A horticulturalist at heart, his
fascination with the local flora is evident as he
remarks on the various tropical vegetation.
This book also contains photographs from GeorgeÕs
own personal collection and provides a fascinating
insight into a time and place very different from
the modern western world.
