Today Advance-Fee Fraud is one of the most effective scams online. In one 15 month period in America over 100 million USD is recorded as paid out in advance-fees to these scams with no return and nothing retrieved, These losses range from a few hundred dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. Note also that this total does not account for losses that for various reasons were not reported. One of the first representations in writing was a story by Arthur Train, The Spanish Prisoner, that appeared in March 1910 The Cosmopolitan Magazine.
