These letters were discovered in the home of Edward and Tiana Godwin Smith about 70 years after they were written. A third cousin, Mildred Case, wrote more than 100 letters to Minnie Albatiana 'Tiana' Godwin, beginning when both girls were about age 17 and continuing for the duration of their youth and beyond. Letters in this first volume were written in Texas before the Great Depression forced the family to move back to their ancestral home in McNairy County, Tennessee. Mildred and Tiana continued to write for many years, even as time and distance separated them. Tiana stored these letters from 85 years ago. Now, years later, daughter Peggy has transcribed and researched the people in each one and published the many letters and pictures as a memorial of the times and people of the Great Depression.
