By year's end, his\u003cbr\u003e\nscore had risen to 25. At the end\u003cbr\u003e\nof July, he became the first French ace to attain 50 victories\u003cbr\u003e\nand was lionized by the French press, becoming a national\u003cbr\u003e\nhero. Having scored a total of 53 victories, Guynemer failed\u003cbr\u003e\nto return from a combat mission on 11 September 1917. He\u003cbr\u003e\nwas only 22 at the time of his death.\u003cbr\u003e\nNeither he nor the wreckage of his airplane were ever\u003cbr\u003e\nfound by the Allies, but the Germans announced that he\u003cbr\u003e\nhad been shot down by Lt.
