The Hardwood Heroes saga picks up in Volume Two with the 1990s, when population explosion on the border led to the building of numerous new schools in towns that had previously had just one school, and thus one team. Volume Two focuses partly on rivalries between towns and within them; for example, the split of the old Harlingen High into two schools in 1993 with the birth of Harlingen South created fierce intra-town competition and not a little controversy. As with the first volume, the bulk of the bookÕs material is a year-by-year recounting of the leading lights in the game of basketball on the high school level, with in-depth reporting on the most prominent moments of each campaign. The author began his work as a sports journalist in the Rio Grande Valley in 1989, has since continued to cover all sports in the area, and thus has unique insight into the game and its allure and special stories. The volume ends with the completion of the 2013-14 season, making for 25 years of stories and statistics of a sport that the Valley has always had high passion for.
