Hayfield is an experiment in language modality: can the two attested modalities (sign and speech) be combined in a coherent way? The Hayfield language is fictionally situated in the context of a culture with a high deaf and hard-of-hearing population; the two modalities are closely tied together, so that rather than remaining separate from each other, deaf and hearing members of the community take part in the same activities and cultural events.
