This book highlights the process and projects from a summer, eight-week, participatory graduate course at Iowa State University. The course consisted of graphic design and human computer interface (HCI)students. In this team-based course students self-identified real world projects with local community organizations and brought these innovative solutions to the community to implement. It is important to note that students did not have a budget and all project ideas had to be produced without capital investment. This is a course that celebrated design and technological innovation and embraced the power of team-based, peer-to-peer learning. These types of courses require a different type of student, a different kind of instructor and a radical approach to delivering an enriching, and relevant, educational experience.
