In 2022, People of the Sacred Land (PSL) and the Truth, Restoration, and Education Committee (TREC) partnered with Village Earth's Native Lands Advocacy Project to produce the Historic Loss Assessment report. This report quantifies the economic losses caused by land dispossession and colonial settlement for nine Native Nations that ceded treaty lands in Colorado, including the Southern Ute Indian Tribes, Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe, Northern and Southern Arapaho, Northern and Southern Cheyenne, Shoshone, and the Kiowa-Apache.
Despite efforts to ensure accuracy, the report acknowledges it only begins to uncover the depth of injustices faced by these communities. Focusing primarily on quantitative impacts, the report highlights how the wealth taken from Native peoples became the foundation for Colorado's development. This approach was chosen to resonate within Western frameworks of justice and policy-making.
The report also recognizes that no amount of data can capture the full extent of pain and intergenerational trauma experienced by ColoradoÕs Native communities.
