First published in 1828, and revised several times, the ÒHistory of the Rebellion of 1745Ó by the famous Scottish historian, scientist and author Robert Chambers is a premier scholarly work on the subject of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. With constant reference to copious primary sources, Chambers narrates the uprising in a compelling and knowledgeable fashion.

Chambers was himself no Jacobite supporter, nor did he approve of the way that the government and its forces handled the situation, so his writing is relatively neutral. He compliments both sides of the conflict where deserved, and metes out criticism where a behaviour or failure was unnecessary. This makes it a relatively unbiased account of this momentous affair, and the constant reference to primary sources keeps it well-grounded in fact, without becoming a work of fiction.

This book belongs in the library of anyone with an interest in British history, the Jacobites, or the struggles in 18th century Scotland.
