Alois Mo_kovsk_ wrote his memoirs (through 1911) in 1955, which were supplemented by memories of the remainder of his life written by his children in 1981. This book of Alois Mo_kovsk_'s memoirs and the memories written by his children was compiled, edited, and illustrated by his great granddaughter, Dawn R. Orsak. The book is illustrated with family photographs and personal papers.
He was born into dire poverty in Moravia, came to Texas in 1883 at the age of 12. Mo_kovsk_ worked his way from farmhand to school teacher, graduating from Sam Houston Normal Institute in Huntsville in 1896. He promoted the teaching of the Czech language throughout his 60 year career, which included positions in Fayette and Lavaca County communities. From 1929 to 1940, Mo_kovsk_ was the editor of the Czech language newspaper, Nov_ Domov. He was a devout Catholic, awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal in 1952 from Pope Pius XII and his son, John, was the Bishop of the Houston-Galveston Diocese from 1975-1985.
