A firefighters fitness level needs to be functional. It is no use if you can carry heavy firefighting equipment but lack the muscular endurance to carry it to the top of a multi-storey block of flats or being able to run a marathon in record time but lack any strength to handle heavy hydraulic gear. As a firefighter, what I do need to be is functionally fit and the exercises in my manual will achieve this.
