Written Chinese is notoriously difficult and time-consuming to learn. Although many programs advertise "shortcuts" promising impossible results, the reality is that hard work and dedication is required for true mastery. Due to the sheer number of Chinese characters, memorization is a difficult problem, and the more characters one learns, the more they can get confused with each other. But memory recall is vastly improved by learning to write the characters since writing stimulates both muscle and visual memory. Learning to write a single Chinese character may require repeatedly writing it hundreds of times. And, in fact, that is how native Chinese speakers are taught from a very young age. This workbook does not claim to offer a quick and easy path to mastery of written Chinese. If you are looking for an effortless method, this workbook is not for you! Recognizing how important repetition and practice is, this workbook provides space for students to practice every character over 450 times. Three worksheet pages are dedicated to each character: The first page introduces the stroke order along with characters to trace over. The second page introduces some blank lines to start practicing writing the character with no guide. By the third page, the student is ready to write the character on their own. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Chinese Proficiency Exam Level 1 covers 174 characters. All 174 characters are included in this workbook, listed in order of frequency, giving a full 522 pages of practice. Although it won't be easy, the results are rewarding, and students will have a thorough grasp of all the HSK Level 1 characters upon completion.
