This exhibition was first planned, its focus was on human rights in China, and two important events have since occurred. First is the tragic death of Liu Xiaobo, the heroic dissident of the democracy movement in China which began in 1989, to whom we dedicate this exhibit recalling his words, ÒI have no enemies and no hatredÓ. Secondly, the American way of life is more apparent in the democratic movements it spawned in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong than in its current practice at home. It is ennobling to be reminded of the significance of American ideals to populations denied freedom of speech and movement. The Statue of Liberty, one of the important icons featured in the work of dissident artists in China, is all the more a resonant symbol in America today.-Patricia Karetzky
