ÒI WONÔT COMPLAINÓ is a dramatic story of Tommy, a young African American man, who is expected to live in the shadows of his militant alcoholic stepfather. He endures physical and mental abuse. TOMMY is a hard but sensitive, articulate young man, who is raised in a welfare laden Philadelphia Public Housing surrounding, but is not bound by the neighborhood mentality. He keeps his abusive memories a secret from others. Only he and his best friend share the truth. Tommy learns to cover his wounds and pretend all is well. The gospel song ÒI WONÕT COMPLAINÓ becomes Tommy's anthem as he fights very hard to hold on to what small self esteem he has. The inner conflict is great and his self worth causes a battle in his mind. His abusers are the Boogieman who sometimes lurk in the shadows.
