Droid, iPhone, Nexus One are all great 2010 devices. The problem is that they try to work on 1990's networks. As evidenced by AT&T's inability to support a deluge of new iPhone users, a 1990's cellular network cannot support 2010 devices. Cell phone base stations were designed to support hundreds of simultaneous, highly compressed (6 Kbps, for example) voice conversations. When an iPhone user connects to the base station and starts a YouTube session at, say 500 Kbps, the cell phone company's 1990's business model is blown to bits. Upgrading those networks to support those YouTube sessions will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. The cell phone companies may not have the cash nor the spectrum to build that kind of network. This book is a call to action for policy changes to support 4G, smart grid and education technology. For 5% of the annual per student allocation (varies by state) a school district could give each student a laptop AND broadband access in their homes.
